On May 17, 1792, twenty-four stock brokers, outside of 68 Wall Street in New York City, signed an agreement underneath a buttonwood tree. This document was later referred to as the Buttonwood Agreement, and created the precursor to what is known today, as the New York Stock Exchange. To us, the name Buttonwood embodies the tradition upon which our industry is built.
